TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Two new homeless shelter options are in the works in two Michigan communities.

In Grand Traverse County, the Community Cares Coalition proposed a new emergency shelter to combat homelessness in the area. The goal is to offer the homeless more resources. The other homeless shelter, Safe Harbor, is only open part of the year and nights only. The new shelter in Garfield Township would be open day and night.

Further south, the Kalamazoo County commissioners unanimously approved the purchase of the Holiday Inn and Suites property on Cork Street in Kalamazoo to turn into a shelter for families experiencing homelessness.

Kalamazoo County Housing Director Mary Balekma said Kalamazoo County donated $3.5 million, while the city of Portage provided $500,000. The city of Kalamazoo kicked in $1.2 million.
