GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – One U.S. Senate seat is up for grabs in Michigan. On Tuesday night, the two candidates hoping to fill that slot will take the debate stage.

Mike Rogers and Rep. Elissa Slotkin will debate on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in Grand Rapids. Democratic U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, who has occupied that seat for more than 20 years, will retire at the end of this term.

Last week, an exclusive Michigan News Source and Mitchell Research and Communications poll showed Slotkin up by five points with 49% compared to Rogers’ 44%.

The impact of this Senate race is profound. The state’s other U.S. Senator, Gary Peters, is a Democrat who is up for reelection in two years. The state has not seen a Republican in the U.S. Senate since Spence Abraham served from 1995-2001 alongside long running U.S. Senator Carl Levin.

Tonight’s debate will air on local affiliates statewide.

A second debate in Detroit will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 15.
