LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – With Michigan gearing up for early in- person voting across the state on October 26th and absentee ballots already rolling in, a new poll from Marketing Resource Group sheds light on what voters are actually interested in hearing from candidates – and it’s not more discussions about abortion.
Conducted from October 7th-10th, the poll shows that while 81% of voters understand that abortion is already protected under the state constitution, only 9.8% want to hear about it on the campaign trail.
Economy tops the list, abortion trails behind.
With the economy and jobs leading at 27.9%, immigration and border security following at 18.3%, and high gas prices in third place with 13.1%, abortion is far from voters’ minds this election season.
The passage of Proposal 3 in 2022 secured abortion access in the Michigan Constitution, allowing women to get an abortion at any stage of pregnancy for any reason, making it a “settled” issue in many voters’ eyes.
Right to Life of Michigan weighs in.
Amber Roseboom, President of Right to Life of Michigan, said in a recent press release: “Michigan voters are savvy…Abortion is not on the ballot. To suggest otherwise is the worst kind of deception, peddling misinformation to prey on women in a crass attempt to win votes.”
She went on to say, “Unsurprisingly, Democrats’ desperate attempts to motivate their base with the lie that abortion is on the ballot is falling flat. Even if every Republican candidate in the state won, there is absolutely nothing they could do to change the fact that a right to abortion is protected in our state constitution.”
What’s at stake in this year’s election? It’s not abortion.
Voters may have abortion fatigue, but that doesn’t mean they’re not paying attention. Candidates who want to win over Michigan’s electorate need to focus on pressing issues like the economy and border security – not recycled debates on abortion.
