(Michigan News Source) — As the 2025 camping season approaches, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced several closures at state parks and recreation areas due to upcoming renovations and infrastructure improvements. With reservations available up to six months in advance, it is important for campers to be aware of these planned closures, which could affect travel plans. The projects, which range from electrical upgrades to road repaving, are part of ongoing efforts to modernize Michigan’s state park system.
Here’s a breakdown of the most significant closures and renovation timelines:
Algonac State Park
- The Riverfront and Wagon Wheel campgrounds at Algonac State Park are closed for renovations, including full-hookup site installations and road repaving. The Riverfront Campground will reopen by March 2025, and Wagon Wheel will reopen by May 15, 2025. The day-use area will also remain closed until mid-to-late October 2024.
Bewabic State Park
- Campers visiting Bewabic State Park in Crystal Falls will find both B and C loops of the modern campground closed throughout the 2025 season. These closures are due to the construction of a new toilet and shower building, as well as road repaving. The A loop will remain open for much of the camping season.
Brighton Recreation Area
- The campground at Bishop Lake within the Brighton Recreation Area will remain closed until mid-May 2025 as crews work on delayed electrical and road system upgrades.
Brimley State Park
- Brimley State Park’s campground and day-use areas are set to reopen by mid-May and mid-June, respectively. Ongoing work includes improvements to the park’s water lines and stormwater system.
Cheboygan State Park
- The campground at Cheboygan State Park will close starting October 15, 2024, and remain closed into the 2025 season. Upgrades will focus on modernizing the toilet and shower facilities. Rustic cabins and the modern lodge will remain open during the renovations.
Clear Lake and Hoeft State Parks
- Both Clear Lake State Park and P.H. Hoeft State Park will see extended closures from October 15, 2024, through mid-June 2025. These closures will allow for extensive improvements to water distribution systems, sanitation stations, and campground facilities.
Interlochen State Park
- The campground at Interlochen State Park is undergoing significant water and sewer system improvements, with the campground slated to reopen by May 15, 2025. The Green Lake Campground will remain open, but sanitation services will be limited. Boating access to both Green Lake and Duck Lake will also stay open during the renovations.
Ludington State Park
- Ludington State Park’s campgrounds will be closed until July 1, 2025, to accommodate road repaving, parking lot expansions, and other infrastructure enhancements aimed at improving visitor access and traffic flow. While much of the park is closed, visitors can still access hiking trails, the boardwalk, and a stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline.
Metamora-Hadley Recreation Area
- The campground at Metamora-Hadley Recreation Area will remain closed through April 2025 for road resurfacing, electrical and water line replacements, and improvements to the camp store.
Otsego Lake State Park
- Otsego Lake State Park’s campground will close in early August 2025 as part of a project to upgrade the park’s electrical and septic systems, including converting 44 campsites to full-hookup options. This closure was delayed from an earlier planned date.
Pontiac Lake Recreation Area
- Pontiac Lake Recreation Area’s campground will remain closed through April 2025 for updates to the sanitation station entrance.
Rifle River and Sleepy Hollow State Parks
- The campground at Rifle River Recreation Area in Lupton will undergo road and electrical upgrades through the spring of 2025. Similarly, Sleepy Hollow State Park will see its modern campground closed from April 15 through October 31, 2025, to accommodate a full replacement of the toilet and shower building, as well as road paving projects.
Tahquamenon Falls State Park
- Both the Portage and Hemlock loops of the Lower Falls modern campground at Tahquamenon Falls State Park will be closed at various points throughout the 2025 season for electrical and water system upgrades. Both loops are expected to reopen in mid-May.
Tawas Point State Park
- The campground at Tawas Point State Park will remain closed until April 30, 2025, while crews work to complete electrical upgrades.
