LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – After Michigan’s Democratic majority voted to slash school safety and mental health resources from this year’s education budget by $300 million, they scrambled to restore half of the funding on Thursday.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer claimed the funding will be restored in future budgets. She said leaders, which include her and the legislature, both are all involved in the budget process. “I would anticipate looking at all of these leaders here that this would continue to be a priority for all of us,” Whitmer said.

But Republicans aren’t having it. State Rep. Mike Harris (R-Waterford) reminded people that the Democrats are still “shortchanging” students by leaving half of the funds on the table and called this partial funding a “P.R. stunt.”
“When they eliminated 92% of school safety and mental health funding, Democrats were met with a justified public outcry from parents, teachers, and school leaders,” Harris said. He compared what Democrats did to “turning in a half-completed homework assignment and expecting full credit. This fails to fully support the safety and well-being of Michigan students,” Harris said.
