LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is referring a request from the Michigan State University Board of Trustees to remove two members to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. Whitmer is asking Nessel to review the recommendation from the other board members.

Since MSU is a public university where voters elect board members, the governor must sign off on any removals.

Whitmer is seeking Nessel’s legal advice concerning former MSU board chair Rema Vassar and trustee Dennis Denno. MSU Trustees voted 6-2 in March to punish Vassar and Denno and to restrict their duties through Dec. 31. An independent report found Vassar and Denno violated the board’s ethics policies and bylaws.

The embattled MSU Board of Trustees has been dealing with internal squabbling and dissention amidst the continued fallout from the Larry Nassar scandal, the 2023 mass shooting, and the sexual harassment and abuse allegations against former head football coach Mel Tucker.
