NEW YORK (Michigan News Source) – Towa Pharmaceutical Europe, a pharmaceutical company, has recalled more than 7,100 bottles of a popular antidepressant because of elevated levels of an ingredient that can cause cancer.

The recall covers duloxetine, which is sold under the names “Cymbalta,” and “Drizalma Sprinkle and Irenka.” The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said the recalled drug has toxic levels of nitrosamines. Officials said those are present in low levels in water and food, but they can also form during the drug-manufacturing process.

The FDA labeled the recall as a Class II; that means the product has a low chance of causing significant injuries or death.

Doctors prescribed the recalled pills in 20mg delayed-release capsules in 500-count bottles. Patients prescribed this drug should stop taking them and contact their physician.
