EAST LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Handling business in their first Big Ten conference game, Michigan State is 2-0 under new coach Jonathan Smith. Showing grit in the final two minutes of the game, MSU drove down the field taking time off the clock before Jonathan Kim hit the game winning field goal from 37-yards for the 37-34 win over Maryland.

Winning his Big Ten debut, Smith becomes only the second MSU head coach to reach this feat behind John L. Smith in 2003 vs. Iowa.

Nick Marsh was given a national award for his offensive effort vs. Maryland being named the Shaun Alexander National Freshman of the Week along with being the Big Ten Freshman of the Week. He caught eight passes for 194 yards and one touchdown recording the second-best most receiving yards by a MSU freshman.

MSU is 8-0 all-time against NCAA FCS opponents last facing Richmond in 2023 with a 45-14 victory. The Spartans defense is now one of the best in the Big Ten after two weeks with eight sacks and 17 tackles for loss. They have also recorded three interceptions in the first two games.

Saturday brings a chance for MSU to move to 3-0 as they host Prairie View A&M (Texas) at 3:40 p.m. on the Big Ten Network. It is the first meeting between the two programs. PVA&M is 1-1 coming off a win over Northwestern State (La.), 37-31.
