LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Michigan Supreme Court has closed the door on businesses seeking to be paid by the state for restrictions that harmed their sales during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The court, in a pair of 5-2 orders, let stand the 2022 appeals court opinions in favor of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s administration.

During 2020 and 2021, Gov. Whitmer closed dine-in establishments and then limited in-person dining. At the time, she claimed her policies saved lives during a COVID-19 uptick, but later admitted many of those policies did not make sense.
The businesses acknowledged the state’s role in managing public health threats. However, they argued they deserved compensation for the government’s taking of private property.
