LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The second attempted assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump on Sunday afternoon has made no impact on the Michigan Democratic Party or its Chair Lavora Barnes.

Less than 48 hours after a 58-year old gunman apparently planned to kill the former president while golfing in Florida, Barnes sent out an email warning people in Michigan about Trump’s upcoming visit to Flint.

“Ex-president and convicted felon Donald Trump will be in Flint today,” Barnes wrote in an email sent out to potential voters on Tuesday morning. She listed five points she claims Trump will discuss at Tuesday evening’s town hall in Flint. Barnes finished by saying, “Trump is a threat to our nation” and sounded the alarm about what she called his “extremists agenda.”

Several hours later, Barnes sent another email discussing JD Vance’s Tuesday afternoon visit in Sparta and urged voters to “send these extremists packing.”

While Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued a statement after the first assassination attempt against Trump in July, she has not issued a statement on the second attempt to date. However, this kind of rhetoric is not new to Michigan Democrats or Whitmer herself. After the attempted assassination in July, the internet’s long memory reminded people about Whitmer’s “8645” sign behind her in a 2020 “Meet the Press” interview. The term “86” means to kill something (like an order in a restaurant) or “take someone out” in mafia slang.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and U.S. Senator Gary Peters issued statement on social media following Sunday’s events, and appear to have cut and pasted each other’s announcements.

Violence against Trump has huge ramifications for Michigan as well. It is predicted to be a key battleground state in November. That’s why both the Trump/Vance campaign and the Harris/Walz campaign are putting Michigan on their schedules frequently. On Tuesday afternoon, Vance will speak in Sparta. Trump will  host a town hall in Flint on Tuesday night. Vice President Kamala Harris will visit Michigan on Thursday.

So what are Michigan Democrats and the Michigan GOP doing about the potential violence stemming from their own parties and the security threats surrounding Trump? Apparently nothing. Michigan News Source reached out to both parties and asked how the recent assassination attempt will change each party’s political messaging, and what they planned to do to curb violence and vitriol in Michigan politics. In addition, Michigan News Source asked Michigan GOP Chair Pete Hoekstra if Republicans are taking action in asking for increased security for Trump. Neither party responded by press time.

In the meantime, local police agencies in Michigan will assuredly be put to the test as both campaigns make Michigan a frequent stop between now and Nov. 5.
