DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Pat Maloney, in his 10th season at McBain High School, earned the Detroit Lions High School Football Coach of the Week award. His team, the Ramblers, defeated rival Beal City, 29-25, on the road, moving to 3-0 on the year and are the no. 9 team in the state for Division 7.

A 23-year coaching veteran, Maloney’s record at McBain in the past 10 years is 62-35, leading them to the playoffs in eight of their nine full seasons. Before McBain, he spent 10 years as head coach at Rudyard and was a three-year assistant coach at Sault Area High School.

“I have a good group of 12 years that have really meshed, and as leaders, make sure all of our younger guys understand that we haven’t won a thing yet other than three games. Our ultimate goal is to keep winning and don’t lose site on every Friday that these teams are going to give you their best shot. We teach them each week to continue to improve and play better,” said Maloney.

McBain football believes in giving back to the community. One item that the football players do is read at the elementary school. Maloney says, “Reading to the kids is just a phenomenal program and we are fortunate that our school is K-12 and our guys can walk down the hall and it makes it easier for us to get into the elementary school. Teachers and parents have committed how much it means to them that the players are coming down to their classes. The kids definitely love it and my players enjoy going down there and come back with great stories.”

The Detroit Lions recognize a Michigan High School football head coach each week during the regular season who best demonstrates success on and off the field, develops players’ character, discipline, and football skills, and emphasizes player health and safety in their program. They also see how the teams are committed to the school and community. Each coach who wins receives a $1,000 donation to his high school’s football program.
