JACKSON, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A government watchdog group has filed a formal complaint with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) against a nonprofit run by the Jackson mayor and his alleged failure to file the correct tax forms.

Michigan Rising Action claims that Jackson Mayor Daniel Mahoney, the principal officer of Many Hands Community Services (MHCS) violated federal law by misrepresenting the organization’s financial activity to avoid filing IRS Form 990 beginning in at least the 2022 tax year. Mahoney is currently running as a Democrat for state representative in District 46 as well.

Abby Mitch with Michigan Rising Action spoke about the complaint on The Steve Gruber Show on Monday. “Every year Democrats want to run on more transparency, and yet more transparency never materializes,” Mitch said.

According to the United Way of South Central Michigan, MHCS focuses on supporting economic “development and equality.” In addition, that includes the “Launch Pad, a mixed-use business incubator empowering local, neighborhood and service-based businesses, especially those serving underserved and underrepresented communities,” according to the United Way website. The last post from MHCS on Facebook was on Aug. 20, 2023.

Michigan News Source reached out to Mahoney but he did not respond by press time. Mitch explained that, “Nonprofits require you to do the right thing and file the right paperwork,” she said. “We make sure the government does what we all pay it to do.”
