FLINT, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – McLaren Health Care is back online with its clinical systems and electronic medical records, three weeks after being hit by a criminal ransomware attack.

Officials said that while patient services are back to normal, the hospital system is still continuing with the investigation and recovery process.

McLaren detected what it described as suspicious activity on its information technology platforms on Aug. 5 and later confirmed the criminal ransomware attack. It snarled the network systems at its 13 hospitals and forced many elective or non-emergency medical procedures and tests to be rescheduled. During that time, McLaren staff documented records on paper.

While McLaren worked to secure its network, the city of Flint, which boasts one of McLaren’s hospitals, also faced its own ransomware attack  around the same time.

The city said it has recovered most of its data and continues to work with a team of consultants.

The Flint City Council is hosting a cyber security workshop on September 11.
