TAWAS CITY, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – An investigation that originally started as a 911 call reporting a possible plane crash in Tawas Bay eventually determined a plane dumped two external fuel tanks full of jet fuel during an emergency.

The call came into the Iosco County Central Dispatch around 1:15 on Wednesday afternoon. The investigation revealed two F-16s from the 180th Fighter Squadron from the Air National Guard in Toledo, Ohio operating in the area. One of the F-16s declared an emergency and dumped two external fuel tanks full of jet fuel.

One landed in Lake Huron and exploded. The other fell into the Baldwin Plaza retail parking lot which includes a Tractor Supply and Save-a-Lot. The tank caused minor damage to a few vehicles. No one was injured and the both planes landed safely back in Toledo.

The U.S. Coast Guard found what was likely part of the other tank in Lake Huron.

Iosco County Sheriff’s Office deputies along with Michigan State Police, United States Coast Guard, Tawas City Police Department, East Tawas Police Department, Tawas City dive team and Oscoda Township rescue dive teams responded to the initial call.
