LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A new nonprofit organization has rolled out its own “hate map,” shining a light on leftist groups that it claims are spreading hate and inciting violence. This initiative aims to counterbalance the Southern Poverty Law Center’s (SPLC) well-known hate map, which predominantly targets right-wing groups and many call politically biased.
The New Tolerance Campaign (NTC) is behind this latest hate mapping effort, presenting a more diverse narrative of where political violence originates.
Not just the right: exposing left-wing extremism.

Gregory Angelo, president of the New Tolerance Campaign, emphasizes that hate and violence are not confined to the far right. “I can forgive the general public for thinking that hate and violence are exclusively the domain of the far Right – that’s the message they’ve been receiving for years from much of the mass media and the Southern Poverty Law Center,” Angelo said to the Daily Signal. He added that the NTC Hate Map, which includes 184 organizations as of last Friday, is designed to challenge this narrative by highlighting instances of left-wing violence and hate.
Michigan’s infamous additions.
The NTC Hate Map features notable entries from Michigan, including Tom Burke, a communist activist from Grand Rapids. Burke, a member of the socialist Freedom Road Organization, openly called for chaos and intimidation at the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. His group planned to “march up to the doors of the Fiserv Auditorium” to cause “chaos” at the event.
Another Michigan-based group on the map is the Palestinian Youth Movement in Warren. This group is recognized for its active anti-Israel stance and was involved in a 2024 protest in Los Angeles that turned violent. The protest, which blocked the entryway to a synagogue, was even condemned by the Biden Administration.
Southern Poverty Law Center’s Michigan targets:
The SPLC has 10 groups listed in Michigan as hate groups including Michigan Parents Involved in Education, Christ the King the Reformed Church, American Freedom Law Center and seven Moms for Liberty groups. They call the church in Charlotte a “white nationalist” organization, the law center anti-Muslim and Moms of Liberty anti-government.
The map wars: A tale of two narratives.
The SPLC has long been criticized for its expansive definition of hate, which many argue unfairly targets mainstream conservative and Christian groups. The SPLC’s 2023 “hate map” included 1,430 organizations, branded as “hate groups” or “antigovernment groups.” Critics argue that the SPLC’s criteria are inconsistently applied, pointing to examples like a Roman Catholic leader being targeted for citing the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
In contrast, the NTC maintains more stringent rules for inclusion on their map, focusing on direct promotion, inspiration, or engagement in physical violence. Their map includes groups such as Black Lives Matter, Jane’s Revenge, and 12 chapters of Students for Justice in Palestine, which have been involved in antisemitic attacks and violence.
Turning the tables.

One of the most notable inclusions on the NTC Hate Map, according to the Daily Signal, is the Southern Poverty Law Center itself. This stems from a 2012 incident where a terrorist used the SPLC’s “hate map” to target a conservative Christian nonprofit for an attempted mass shooting. The SPLC has faced multiple defamation lawsuits over its accusations and has been embroiled in scandals, including racial discrimination and sexual harassment allegations.
The New Tolerance Campaign’s effort to document left-wing hate and violence aims to create a more balanced view of political extremism in the United States. As Angelo noted, “If we’re truly going to address all hate in the United States, we need to be honest about it.”
The NTC Hate Map may be in its early stages, but it already shows signs of beating the SPLC at its own game by correcting some of the most glaring oversights. With a mission to uphold real tolerance in American society, the NTC’s map serves as a new resource for the media, civil servants, and the general public, challenging the established narratives of hate and extremism.
