BIG RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The China-linked Gotion battery plant in Big Rapids is moving forward with construction after a federal judge upheld a lower court’s ruling.

The judge ruled that the Green Charter Township Board of Trustees must honor its development agreement with Gotion Inc. while a lawsuit is pending.

The taxpayer-funded project has received substantial pushback from the community. However, the development agreement outlines a list of conditions and obligations that both Gotion and Green Charter Township must meet.

The township must assist Gotion Inc. in obtaining licenses, permits, or other governmental authorizations related to the project. In addition, officials must execute easement documents and coordinate with the Mecosta County Road Commission and Mecosta County Drain Commission.

Gotion must also meet certain stipulations. The company must give area residents priority over new jobs, limit traffic congestion, and not promote political philosophies among employees or the community. Many have expressed concerns over the company’s admitted communist China ties.
