LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – It looks like Michigan’s older residents aren’t content to just sit in rocking chairs on the porch. They’ve been busy with a different kind of rocking – hitting the virtual classrooms of GetSetUp, an online learning platform that’s been a lifeline for aging adults.

This partnership, now celebrating its fourth year, has been all about keeping the mind sharp, the body moving, and the social calendar full for Michigan’s 60-and-older crowd.

Since 2020, seasoned students in Michigan have clocked in for over 1.5 million classes, proving that age is just a number, not a limit. With access to over 5,000 classes in 40 categories, Michigan’s seniors have embraced lifelong learning with the enthusiasm of kids on the first day of school.

Still spry: a partnership that’s aging gracefully.

“We are proud to partner with GetSetUp to offer a wide array of classes that enrich the lives of older Michigan residents,” said Elizabeth Hertel, MDHHS director. “This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to support the health and well-being of our senior community and create opportunities for our residents to connect and engage.”

GetSetUp’s classes cover all the bases including health and wellness classes, tech, cooking, travel, art, photography, language, music, financial planning and more. The main package of classes is free. The “community plan” includes 10 live classes available every week and unlimited community-led sessions – with upgrades available.

GetSetUp’s president and co-founder, Lawrence Kosick, couldn’t be prouder of the program saying, “Michigan was our first statewide partner, and we are incredibly proud to positively impact Michiganders as we move into our fourth year of a thriving partnership that benefits hundreds of thousands of older adults. The success and engagement we’ve seen in Michigan exemplify the power of lifelong learning and community connection. Our partnership highlights the practical impact that MDHHS has on its older residents daily to show a shift and change to offer this growing aging demographic empowering opportunities.”

Vintage learning: GetSetUp keeps getting better with age.

GetSetUp is no ordinary platform. It’s where seasoned learners come together, led by experts who know what it’s like to have seen a few decades pass by. Classes are taught in multiple languages, making sure no one is left out of the loop. The platform partners with local agencies and libraries to reach even the most remote corners of Michigan, ensuring that every senior has the chance to keep growing, no matter where they are.

So, while some might say “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” Michigan’s older adults are proving them wrong, one class at a time.
