DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – U.S. Customs and Border Protection report that agents at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport seized 90 Giant African Land Snails from a traveler in June.
Officials say a traveler arriving from Ghana had the invasive species in a bag. The passenger declared other prohibited items and agents found the snails after noticing an unusual smell. The snails were intended to be eaten but if released, they could cause major crop damage, eat through stucco on homes, and pose a public health risk.

Agents also intercepted live snails at the airport in March 2023; that traveler was also arriving from Ghana. In October 2023, an invasive Egyptian locust was seized at the Port of Detroit after it was found in cargo coming from Italy.
