LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer offered a statement following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on Saturday, saying the events left her “horrified” while she denounced political violence of any kind. However, it did not take long for social media to push back against her purported hypocrisy.
People reminded their social media followers about this screenshot of Gov. Whitmer appearing on “Meet the Press” in October 2020 where an “8645” placard appeared in the background.

Remember when Gretchen Whitmer had blocks reading 8645 behind her? 86 being a term used by the mafia when they intended to kill someone. pic.twitter.com/VkYnBa1UHR

The number “86” is restaurant slang for nixing an order, or to indicate to wait staff that a certain dish is no longer able to be served. It also means “to get rid of” and is short for “killing someone.”
The number “45” references Trump as the 45th president.
Whitmer brushed off criticism at the time, saying through her spokesman saying “the silly season is officially here.” The display of “8645” came within months of the kidnapping plot against Whitmer where she decried violence against her and her family. The case of two men convicted in those cases is being appealed citing FBI entrapment.
On Sunday night, Gov. Whitmer issued another, longer statement. She called President Trump’s attempted assassination “a disgusting act of violence.”
“Behind all these incidents is rhetoric,” Whitmer said. “We have seen calls to hate, harm, or jail political opponents.” She added, “Let’s chart a better path for our politics.”
President Trump will attend the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee this week.
