GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Secret Service is upping its game this weekend when former President Donald Trump speaks at a rally in Grand Rapids on Saturday.

The embattled department has been deservedly raked over the coals this week. Their alleged laissez-faire attitude in protecting Trump last weekend at a rally in Pennsylvania almost cost him his life at the hands of a would-be assassin.

Last weekend, a 20-year-old shooter accessed a roof about 150 yards from Trump’s podium. He fired at the former president, hitting his ear. Law enforcement killed the shooter. A Trump supporter died and two others were injured.

Video and eyewitness accounts detail that they saw the shooter and tried to warn police and secret service long before he got off the shot.

Former President Trump will greet supporters in Grand Rapids with his new vice presidential pick, JD Vance. The visit marks the first public appearance since Trump formally accepted the nomination for president at the Republican National Convention on Thursday night.

Trump recalled Saturday’s events during his speech, describing the moments leading up to the shooting and the pain afterwards. As the Secret Service rushed him to safety, Trump said he noticed the crowd of supporters did not flee when the shooting began.

“This beautiful crowd didn’t want to leave me,” Trump said in Thursday night’s remarks. “[They are] incredible people.”

He also reflected on how close he came to losing his life. “I’m here only by the grace of God,” Trump said. When he said “I’m not supposed to be here” the crowd shouted back, “Yes you are!”
