LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan’s police department in the capital city is now under new leadership.

Mayor Andy Schor named 45-year-old Robert Backus as Lansing’s new police chief. Backus is a 24-year Lansing Police Department veteran.

Backus succeeds former Chief Ellery Sosebee who abruptly retired last month. He’d served as chief for two-and-a-half years and worked in the department for more than two decades.

“Chief Backus has been an incredible leader within the LPD ranks for years,” Schor said in a news release. “He shares my deep concern and vision for getting illegal guns off the streets and out of the hands of those who shouldn’t have them, and for keeping our community safer,” Schor stated.

The new chief said he’s honored that the mayor put his trust in him. “I appreciate the opportunity and am excited for the future and look forward to serving the Lansing community and our department personnel,” Backus said.
