HILLSDALE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A 43-year-old Marshall man has been bound over for trial in Hillsdale County on seven felonies related to alleged assaults of a county jail inmate in December 2021.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced that Ronald Leggitt will stand trial. At the time of the alleged assaults he worked as a Sergeant for the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Department.

In the early morning hours of December 16th, 2021, police brought a woman into custody at the Hillsdale County jail where Leggitt was supervising operations and staff. The woman had resisted arrest and continued that behavior in the jail. It is alleged that over the course of 80 minutes, Leggitt assaulted the inmate six times with pepper spray. During five of the six alleged assaults, Leggitt allegedly used an emergency restraint chair as well as a chest restraint.

Leggitt could spend several years in prison the various counts he faces. A trial date has not yet been set.
