DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – President Joe Biden visited Detroit on Friday evening but he did not receive the red carpet welcome a sitting president normally receives.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, his reelection campaign co-chair, skipped town to promote her recently launched book. Her schedule also included a stop at the Sun Valley Conference of tech and media executives in Idaho.

Other no-shows included both the state’s U.S. Senators and fellow Democrats Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, who is running to fill Stabenow’s seat when she retires in November, did not attend the event. UAW President Shawn Fain, whose rank-and-file has endorsed Biden, proved MIA as well.

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson was on hand to greet the President.

Biden told the crowd he is not dropping out of the race. The Democratic party, which normally remains lock-step behind a candidate, has seen a deviation in its unity as some have called for him to step aside. One day before Biden’s visit to Detroit, Michigan Congresswoman Hillary Scholten (D) called for him to “pass the torch” and exit the race.
