LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Owning a dog can be a pricey endeavor, but for many, the benefits far outweigh the costs. Despite the hefty price tag, the joy and companionship of a furry friend are priceless. Let’s dig into the nitty- gritty of dog ownership expenses and why it’s still a worthwhile investment.

The cost of being top dog.

According to a recent study by MarketWatch, U.S. dog owners spend an average of $28,000 over their pet’s lifetime. In California, the cost climbs to a whopping $35,452, more than the price of a Tesla Model 3 after taxes. Following closely are New York at $34,248, Massachusetts at $33,318, and New Jersey at $32,947.

In Michigan, the price tag comes in at $26,499, with the state #37 as the most expensive state to own a dog. Puppies cost $1,025 in the state, with the annual price for owning a dog being $2,316.

Expenses pile up quickly with the cost of kibble, vet visits, dog walkers, daycare, and pet insurance. On average, vaccines for puppies cost $199, spay or neuter operations cost $298, preventative medicine (fleas, ticks, heart worm) runs $184, and general supplies add up to $356. That totals over $1,000 before even considering the recurring costs.

In the doghouse? Not quite.

Despite the high costs, which have been driven up even more the last few years because of inflation, dog owners are finding ways to cut corners without sacrificing care. Dr. Angela Beal, DVM, an Ohio- based veterinarian, suggests at-home grooming, boarding dogs with friends and family, and investing in pet insurance as effective ways to manage expenses. While policyholders pay a monthly premium, insurance can cover a significant portion of unexpected veterinary bills, ultimately lowering overall costs.

Another way to save on the price of your pet’s medical care is with a credit card called “Care Credit” which is accepted at many veterinarian offices. It can be used for every day vet care, dental cleanings, checkups, emergency procedures and more.

It’s also wise to shop around for deals either online or at your local pet stores, including finding pet supplies and other pet-related items at your local second-hand store. Facebook Marketplace, garage sale groups and other social media pages and sites also ofter an opportunity fo find deals.

In Traverse City, the Cherryland Humane Society’s Thrift Store is a great venue for that. Not only do shoppers get great deals on things like clothing, kitchen supplies, shoes, books, linens, sporting equipment and jewelry, the store also has gently used pet beds, pet toys, pet books and other pet- related items. The icing on the cake is the fact that the proceeds directly contribute to the well-being of the dogs and cats in their care and help cover the animal shelter’s daily operating costs.

Every dog has its day.

Why, despite these costs, do people continue to invest in their canine companions? The answer lies in the immeasurable benefits. Owning a dog has been shown to reduce stress, increase physical activity, and provide unwavering companionship. Dogs offer a unique form of loyalty and love that’s hard to find elsewhere. And most pet owners treat their pets like family (or better than family) which means they are often willing to spend money on their pets instead of themselves.

A USA Today study revealed that 91% of pet owners have experienced financial stress related to pet care costs, with 66% cutting back on personal spending to take care of heir pet, and over a third have taken on extra jobs to afford their pets. Yet, these sacrifices are often seen as worth it for the joy and comfort a dog brings into their lives.

Puppy love Is priceless.

When weighing the costs, it’s essential to remember that the benefits of dog ownership aren’t just about the numbers. The companionship, unconditional love, and joy that dogs bring into our lives are invaluable. For many, the bond with their pet is worth every penny spent.
