DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – The Detroit Police Department is set to introduce a new lasso-like restraint tool called the BolaWrap to help de-escalate situations.

In February, the Detroit City Council approved a $32,000 contract to purchase 22 BolaWrap devices specifically for mental health-related emergency calls.

These devices use a wiry tether with barbed ends to restrict movement in a non-lethal, low-pain manner, prioritizing safety over traditional methods like Tasers or beanbag rounds. The department plans to deploy the BolaWraps by the end of the year following the completion of training.
