LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The 27-year-old Lansing man charged with the first degree murder of 2-year-old Wynter Smith last summer pleaded guilty to those charges on Monday.

Rashad Maleek Trice also pleaded guilty to assaulting Wynter’s mother before kidnapping the girl and driving her to southeast Michigan. He resisted arrest but police eventually arrested him in St. Clair Shores. Wynter’s body was found three days later in a Detroit alley. First-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

“The scars left by Mr. Trice’s horrific and brutal crime spree will forever etch themselves on the lives he shattered,” said Michigan Attorney General Nessel. “While nothing can ever fully heal the grief of Wynter’s family and loved ones, I hope today’s plea can be a step toward healing.”

Trice will be sentenced on Aug. 16 at 9 a.m. in front of Judge Joyce Draganchuk in the 30th Judicial Circuit Court in Ingham County.
