Since his abysmal performance during the first presidential debate last month with GOP candidate Donald Trump, a growing number of Democrats have called for him to step aside. They have cited the 81-year-old’s declining mental health and expressed doubts about his ability to do the job.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” Biden wrote in a post on the social media post. “And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote.

Biden said he will address the nation later this week.
