LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is out with its list of the top major cities for dog bites and one Michigan city is in the top 20.

Detroit reported 19 bites last year. It joined three other major cities tied for no. 20 with 19 bites on the list: Long Beach, California, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Portland, Oregon.

Los Angeles is no. 1 with 65 mail carriers bitten last year. That’s nine more bites than the second city on the list, Houston. Rounding out the top five are Chicago, St. Louis, and Cleveland.

In 2023, postal workers incurred 5,800 bites.

According to the USPS website, the Insurance Information Institute reports the average cost per insurance claim for a dog bite is $64,555. In addition, dog owners could be responsible for medical bills, lost wages, uniform replacement costs, and pain and suffering for the employee.
