CORUNNA, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Dairy animals won’t be shown at the Shiawassee County Fair this summer, according to county and state officials.

The reason? The presence of the bird flu in Michigan.

As of May 3, bird flu had been confirmed in 18 domestic animals in Michigan across Eaton, Ionia and Saginaw counties. Michigan has also had two confirmed cases of bird flu in people.

Officials pointed out that the decision stemmed from “abundance of caution” regarding the county’s dairy herds. “The dairy exhibitors will create educational exhibits in the dairy barn to share information regarding the dairy industry with the public,” the post read. “Several activities for the dairy exhibitors to participate in throughout the week in place of the dairy shows are being coordinated.”

County fair officials said the decision does not affect the beef barn or sale animals.

The Shiawassee County Fair runs August 4-10.
