CENTREVILLE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. That’s the message from St. Joseph County Undersheriff Jason Bingaman and other law enforcement officers who said a retail scam is making its way though Michigan.
The Sheriff’s office recently investigated a possible stolen skid steer. The victim reported purchasing the skid steer at a fair market value and everything seemed to be normal. Upon investigation, deputies discovered a scam where individuals rent equipment from stores like Home Depot and then sell them at average cost before they are due back.

Officials said the scam popped up on the east side of the state but has now moved into southwest Michigan. Bingaman wants all residents of St. Joseph County to be vigilant when purchasing equipment from private parties. In addition, he said if people do purchase equipment from private parties, they should attempt to verify the authenticity.
Anyone with information is asked to call St. Joseph County Central Dispatch at 269-467-4195.
