Police say Chidester had a blood alcohol level of 0.18, more than twice the legal limit, when she drove through the wall of a boat club during a child’s birthday party on April 20. Chidester’s lawyer argued his client’s medical issues caused the crash. Chidester told deputies after the crash she drank wine earlier in the day, and takes medication to treat seizures.

The mother of deceased siblings 8-year-old Alanah Phillips and 5-year-old Zayn Phillips, Mariah Dodds, testified that her 12-year-old son is still recovering from the crash in a hospital bed at home.
