LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Bacterial kidney disease (BKD) that sickened more than 31,000 Atlantic salmon in April forced the The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to euthanize the fish.

Staff in charge of routine prestocking inspection of fish being reared at Wexford County’s Harrietta State Fish Hatchery found bacterial kidney disease. Staff at the Michigan State University Aquatic Animal Health Lab confirmed the discovery.

The DNR prescribed a 28-day antibiotic treatment but the treatment proved ineffective.

BKD is a bacterial disease is believed to be largely responsible for the decline in Great Lakes Chinook salmon populations in the mid-1980s.

While the euthanizing of 31,000 salmon is distressing, there is still good news. The DNR said it stocks an upwards of 30 million fish annually into Michigan’s public waters.
