LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – On May 30th, 2024, history was made as the first former American president was convicted of a felony – not just one, but 34. In what has been called the “hush money” trial, the jury delivered a decisive verdict, finding the former president guilty on all counts. The case centered around payments to a porn star and whether Trump knowingly falsified records for political gain. 12 jurors said he did.
Democrats celebrate victory.
Democrats celebrated across cable shows and social media after the verdict was read shortly after 5 pm on Thursday EST, viewing the conviction as a long-awaited victory after years of impeachments, accusations, indictments, and political targeting of the former president. It soon became apparent they believe they had finally succeeded in holding him accountable for something.

However, what that actually means in reality remains to be seen as it’ll be another two months until we learn about his punishment for the crimes he has been convicted of. Trump’s sentencing will occur on July 11th, four days ahead of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Trump will most likely not be put in prison.
Most legal experts are saying that it’s very unlikely that Trump will be jailed and that he is more likely to be put on home arrest and/or given probation with many conditions. The judge in this case has two months to figure out what he’s going to do, enough time to consult with others and look at the shifting political landscape in front of him while attorneys on both sides prepare their arguments.
If Trump is placed under home arrest instead of being sent to prison as his critics prefer, it would still count as a “victory” for many of his adversaries. The former president would be unable to hold election rallies in person without getting permission, although they could still happen if his sentence is put on hold pending the outcome of any appeals – and most think that any appeal decisions wouldn’t happen until 2025.
Trump and Biden respond to verdict.
Former President Donald Trump defiantly responded to the guilty verdict in his New York criminal trial on Thursday labeling it a “rigged” proceeding and pointing fingers at the Biden administration for orchestrating it.
Trump, calling himself a “political prisoner” deemed the trial a sham, criticizing the judge and alleging political motives behind the prosecution. He vowed to fight the verdict, asserting his innocence and framing the trial as an assault on the Constitution. He also held a press conference on Friday and praised a Daily Mail poll that showed he had gained six points after the verdict.
President Biden hasn’t commented publicly on the verdict but a social media link said, “There’s only one way to keep Donald Trump out of the Oval Office: At the ballot box.”
Michigan’s response to verdict.
Just about everyone else in the country has an opinion about Trump’s conviction and most of them expressed that opinion on Thursday evening including many Michigan lawmakers and politicians.

Michigan Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson didn’t talk about Trump directly but commented on X: “The truth, the law, democracy. These basic building blocks or who we are as Americans will always prevail when people of integrity stand up, speak out, and demand they do.”
Senate Majority Leader Winnie Banks (D-Grand Rapids) is urging Americans to “respect the decision of the court” adding that Trump got a “fair” trial and “is now going to be held accountable for his crimes.”
Rep. Dan Kildee (D-Flint) made a statement on X saying, “In America, no one is above the law, no matter your power, prestige, or position. The verdict today shows that the former president is no exception. The former president received due process and a fair trial. The jury has rendered its verdict, and all Americans should respect the verdict and the rule of law. The former president’s criminal actions will remain a stain on our nation’s history. The American people deserve better than a leader who is willing to break the law or put himself first over the interests of the American people he was elected to serve. Donald Trump cannot be trusted to lead this nation into the future.”
The Michigan Democrat Party sent out a quick email to solicit donations on Thursday evening. They said in their email appeal, “The jury in New York has found former President Donald Trump guilty on all 34 counts. Trump is the first U.S. President to be convicted of a crime while on the campaign trail but that doesn’t mean he is giving up on the election in November. We need to prepare right now to combat Trump and MAGA Republicans to keep Trump out of the White House for good. Rush a contribution today so we can keep Trump and his criminal behavior out of the White House.”
U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin who is running for the open senate seat in Michigan said on X: “This is an unprecedented moment, and a sad one for our country: a former president convicted of a series of crimes. Presidents should be leaders we look up to; now, one of them is a convicted felon, found guilty by a jury of his peers. That’s nothing to celebrate. The only good news is that our justice system worked, even under enormous pressure. Every American, even a former president, must be held accountable under the law. That principle is foundational to our country, and more important than any one president, candidate or campaign.”
So far, several of the top Democrats in the state have yet to chime in with any official statements or comments as of the publishing of this article. That includes Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Attorney General Dana Nessel, and U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters.
U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Ann Arbor) has also not made a statement on Trump’s conviction yet according to an email from her Digital Director, Elle Walters.
On the other side of the aisle, Michigan Republicans are supporting the former president and speaking out against what they also see as a “rigged” trial.
Former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers who is running for the open Senate seat in the state, released a statement about the Trump conviction saying “It’s been clear that these charges were politically motivated from the beginning, and while thankfully our system of justice doesn’t place all the power in rabidly-partisan district attorneys, this rigged trial and un-American persecution of President Trump is an indelible stain on our nation. I have no doubt that this affront to justice will be successfully appealed and President Trump will be cleared, but we cannot ignore Joe Biden and his allies’ reckless weaponization of our nation’s justice system and the long- term damage his malice has caused.”
Former U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, who is also running for the senate seat, said on X: “Set aside the politics. Today’s verdict is an affront to the Rule of Law and a perversion of justice. Bragg weaponized the legal system to indict Trump on charges that never would have been brought against anyone else. This selective and abusive prosecution will further undermine confidence in our Constitution and divide America. It must not stand.”
Another GOP Senate candidate, Sandy Pensler of Grosse Pointe Park, said Thursday was a “really sad day for America whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat.” He added, “The charges were ones that would have never been brought if he wasn’t running for president, and I think that’s outrageous. I think the jury instructions clearly violated the Sixth Amendment and will be overturned on appeal. Also, it’s rocket fuel for his campaign. The fact that someone can be convicted of a felony, and everyone thinks it is so biased.”
U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman (R-Watersmeet) said on X: “This is a dark day for our Nation. The weaponization of our justice system is obvious, egregious, and just sad. This sham of a trial has been purely political from start to finish and indicative of the Banana Republic that President Biden is hell-bent on turning us into.”
U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga (R-Holland) said on X: “The circus has come full circle. This trial was a sham and embodies the dangerous lawfare being utilized to undermine our system of justice.”
U.S. Rep. John James (R-Shelby Twp.) said on X: “Left-wing hypocrites call Republicans a threat to democracy when it’s the Democrats who are putting their political opponents on trial in attempt to jail them. It’s the Democrats who’ve threatened to kick their biggest political rival off the ballot and to get rid of the Electoral College. It’s the Democrats who are seizing their opponents’ assets in an election year.”
James added, “These charges should never have been brought. The Left-wing hypocrites who supported this “trial” and outcome do not seek justice, but revenge. This isn’t accountability, it’s election interference and the American people will hold them accountable in November.”
U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Tipton) said on X: “This has always been about politics and weaponizing the judicial system to take out the front-runner of the presidential election. No matter your political beliefs, this entire process has simply been a travesty.”
Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt (R-Porter Twp.) told Bridge Michigan that the Trump case is “continued lawfare against President Trump” and said he expected a quick appeal. He added, “I don’t think independents are following it at all,” predicting that the verdict could lead to an “energized” Republican base heading into the November general election.
Michigan House Minority Leader Matt Hall (R-Richland Twp.) has said in a statement, “This decision, in Democrat-controlled New York CIty, is a complete stain on America’s rule of law and our Constitution. Democrats invented these felony charges to achieve what they will not be able to at the ballot box. At the hands of a George Soros backed prosecutor this entire case has been wrong since the beginning. Joe Biden sending progressive Hollywood hero Robert De Niro to the courthouse steps this week proves Biden has had his thumb on the scale of justice the entire time.”
Hall continued to say, “This verdict is election interference and Michiganders will not stand for a two-tiered system of justice. Rest assured, the ultimate jury will be the American people on Election Day when President Trump resoundingly defeats Joe Biden and sends him out of office as the most crooked president in American history.”
Michigan Rep. Lisa McClain (R-Bruce Twp.) said on X: “Sham court, sham trial. If Donald Trump’s name wasn’t Donald Trump, he would’ve been acquitted. What a travesty.
The Michigan Republican Party said on X: “New York’s sham trial against the people’s President has been an unprecedented attack on our constitutional republic – Michigan stands with President Trump. We’re fighting like never before to send him back to the White House and take our country back this November.” The MIGOP Chair, Pete Hoekstra, commented further on X saying: “Trump verdict disappointing and outrageous.”
Hoekstra also said in a statement, as reported by the Detroit News, “This sham trial has been widely disregarded by legal experts. It’s meant to be a distraction from the real issues at play – the issues that (President Joe) Biden knows he’s losing on with Michigan voters – like the economy, the attack on our automobile industry and the weakness of our southern border.”
