LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A group that aimed to put zoning control over wind and solar projects back in the hands of local governments has failed to collect enough signatures to make the November ballot.

Citizens for Local Choice is not accepting this as defeat, but is aiming to have the proposal on the ballot in 2026.

Last year, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed multiple renewable energy laws that added barriers to local control of zoning for renewable energy projects and put the power in the hands of state government. It also gave Lansing the ability to override local zoning decisions.

The campaign appears timely since Gov. Whitmer and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) have been pushing foreign megasite projects on several Michigan communities, including Big Rapids, Marshall, Flint, and Eagle Township.
