ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Ann Arbor Public Schools is expected to vote next Monday regarding proposed cutbacks and layoffs totaling $20.4 million in budget cuts for the upcoming school year.

Superintendent Jazz Parks provided comprehensive budget plan recommendations to its school board on Wednesday. That plan included layoffs of 94 teachers, which is 6% of its total teaching staff. It also includes reduction of other staff. Other suggestions to close the gap included closing middle school pools and axing foreign language classes at elementary schools. Band and orchestra courses at the high school level that do not meet a  students quota are also on the chopping block.

The school district has a $315 million budget, but the ripple effect from projected student loss has triggered the $20 million deficit. Superintendent Parks said the district “did not act quickly enough to take action, and so now, some more significant action is necessary,” she said.

The district projects a loss of 105 students a year through 2028. The district currently has 16,838 students.
