LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced she plans to sue the fossil fuel industry for what she claims is its role in changing Michigan’s climate.

Nessel, who has fought for shutting down Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac and lost several times, is now attempting to take on the oil and gas industry.

In court documents, Nessel said the oil and gas industry have profited while knowingly selling products that cause climate change.

“I don’t know that there’s a bigger issue facing the state of Michigan than climate change,” Nessel said to The Detroit News.

Nessel’s announcement comes days after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer visited the tornado-ravaged Portage area where she blamed climate change on Tuesday’s storms.

“It’s undeniable,” Whitmer told reporters. “We’re seeing intense impacts from climate change.”

Michigan joins Minnesota, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, Rhode Island that have filed similar climate change lawsuits against oil and gas companies.
