LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer appeared on “Meet the Press” over the weekend and appeared to side-step questions regarding her stance on abortions though all nine months of pregnancy.
When asked, “Should there be any limits on viability, which usually falls somewhere between 24 to 26 weeks?” Whitmer said she supports the “Roe standard” but failed to explain that standard. She also said she “is not a doctor.”

Whitmer referred to the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade case which recognized a Constitutional right to abortion in all 50 states and referenced a “right to privacy” interpretation not specifically stated in the Constitution. Roe did set up a “trimester framework” which did not put any restrictions on first trimester abortions, but did add some leeway for states to protect mothers and babies in the second and third trimester.
The U.S. Supreme Court overturned that decision in 2022 and returned abortion regulations to the states in 2022.
