MICHIGAMME TOWNSHIP (AP) — An Upper Peninsula man and his dog have been rescued from the icy waters of an inland lake in Marquette County.
Marquette County Sheriff’s Office officials said 56-year-old Thad Cooper of Michigamme Township searched for his dog on Friday afternoon. That’s when he spotted his pet poking his head above the ice more than 100 yards off shore on Lake Michigamme.

Cooper kayaked onto the lake to try to rescue the dog but fell in. A sheriff’s dive team reached Cooper with a flotation board and pulled him to shore. Rescuers then saved the dog. Both spend about 90 minutes in the water.
Officials said two first responders were taken to a hospital and treated for hypothermia; another responder sought treatment for a cut after falling through the ice.
