LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Something will look very different the next time Michigan residents go to renew, update, or replace state driver licenses or IDs.

The iconic Mackinac Bridge will no longer be a part of the design. Officials say new designs and security features will be phased in over the next five years to comply with new federal security laws.

A new federal law will start in May 2027. It says the existing standard Michigan driver’s license or state ID without certain compliant technology won’t be sufficient to take domestic flights or enter military bases and other regulated facilities.
