DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Michigan and Ohio are seeing cases of measles pop up for the first time in several years, and health officials are urging people to stay up to date on vaccinations.

Michigan confirmed its first case of measles in five years after an Oakland County child came down with the disease late last week. Multiple cases popped up in Ohio for the first time since a 2022 outbreak led to dozens of hospitalizations.

The Oakland County child with the infection traveled internationally recently; state health officials said they do not believe people were exposed outside the child’s household.

The cases have prompted reminders from health officials to to be vaccinated against preventable diseases. Measles is a highly contagious virus that causes fever, rash, and spreads through the air or through direct person-to-person contact.
