LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – As of Monday, thousands of Michigan households have received their checks as part of the Working Families Tax Credit which on average is returning $550 to families.

So far, the nearly 300,000 checks worth more than $219 million have been sent to taxpayers according to Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Those Michigan taxpayers who received a 2022 tax year Michigan Earned Income Tax Credit for Working Families will soon receive a supplemental check in the mail according to the Michigan Department of the Treasury.

“With the Working Families Tax Credit check now making its way into the mailboxes of Michiganders, many families will feel a great sense of relief,” said Governor Whitmer. “By rolling back the retirement tax and quintupling the Working Families Tax Credit, we’re not just saving hundreds of thousands of Michiganders money on their taxes; we’re providing families the support necessary to focus on what truly matters—paying the bills, putting food on the table, or even affording the basics such as groceries. Let’s continue to work together to lower costs for Michiganders and grow our economy.”

What does the Tax Credit Do and Who is Eligible?

Eligible taxpayers were given a 6% Michigan Earned Income Tax Credit when they filed their state individual income tax return for the 2022 tax year.

After legislation that was signed last March became state law on Feb. 13, those taxpayers who received a Michigan Earned Income Tax Credit when they filed their 2022 tax year state individual income tax return last year can expect to receive a supplemental check that makes the Michigan Working Family Tax Credit match the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) up to 30%, from the previous 6%. Soon families will be mailed the remaining 24% portion of their 2022 tax year Michigan Earned Income Tax Credit for Working Families according to the office of the Governor.

While the average check is just above $500, taxpayers can determine a precise amount by taking the Line 27b of their 2022 MI-1040 return and multiplying it by 4 according to the office of the Governor.

When Should Families Expect the Additional Aid?

The State Treasury is estimating that all eligible taxpayers will receive the checks within five to six weeks from Feb. 13. If they have not received their checks by April 1, the Treasury encourages them to reach out.

“My team is working hard to ensure that 700,000 Michigan households receive their supplemental checks while simultaneously processing tax returns,” said State Treasurer Rachael Eubanks. “These checks are being sent in batches due to seasonal mailing demands. We anticipate this mailing will be completed in the next few weeks and ask eligible taxpayers to be patient as we work as fast as practical to get your check to you.”
