DEARBORN, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Democratic voters and party strategists in Michigan are devising tactics for the state’s presidential primary on two fronts, with one strategy seemingly holding a greater potential for success than the other.

Reports indicate that the antics of the Democrats include a plan on the Democrat side to send President Biden a message about his support of Israel by not voting for the president in the presidential primary.

Arab American leaders in Michigan are spearheading a “Listen to Michigan” campaign, aiming to rally Democratic voters to select the Democratic ballot in the state’s presidential primary. However, rather than endorsing President Biden or any other Democratic candidate, they urge voters to cast their ballots as “uncommitted.”

Voting “uncommitted” means that a voter supports the party but not any particular candidate. In this case, the pro-Palestinian group started the campaign because they don’t agree with Biden’s support of Israel and they are demanding a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.

The movement is supported by Democratic lawmakers.

According to the Detroit News, thirty-two state and local officials, including state lawmakers, have pledged to vote “uncommitted” on the Democratic presidential primary ballot.

The movement has the support of Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud who says that Arab Americans are feeling a sense of betrayal about Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war. He said in a New York Times piece on Tuesday that there is a “constant fear and mourning” and a “visceral sense of betrayal” in Dearborn where the city’s population consists of a majority of Arab Americans.

Supporting the “uncommitted” voting movement, Hammoud said, “In the past three federal elections, Arab American voters in Michigan have become a crucial and dependable voting bloc for the Democratic Party, and we were part of the wave that delivered for Joe Biden four years ago.”

Hammoud went on to say, “But this fact seems long forgotten by our candidate as he calls for our votes once more while at the same time selling the very bombs that Benjamin Netanyahu’s military is dropping on our family and friends.”

Michigan’s Rashida Tlaib is the sister of the “uncommitted” campaign organizer.

Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib, whose district includes parts of Detroit and surrounding communities, also supports the “uncommitted” voting movement. Tlaib is asking for voters to stand up for every life killed in Gaza, and demanding a cease fire to send a message to President Biden.

Tlaib, whose sister Layla Elabed, runs the “uncommitted” campaign, said in a video posted to her X account, “It is important, as you all know, to not only march against the genocide (of Palestinians), not only making sure that we’re calling our members of congress, and local electeds and passing city resolutions all throughout our country, it is also important to create a voting bloc, something that is a bullhorn to say ‘enough is enough.’”

The Michigan representative who is an abortion supporter went on to say, “We don’t want a country that supports wars and bombs and destruction. We want to support life.”

Asking voters to vote uncommitted in the Democratic Michigan presidential primary, Tlaib said, “This is the way you can raise our voices, to make us even more visible. Right now, we feel completely neglected – neglected and just unseen by our government. If you want us to be louder, then come here and vote uncommitted.”

Biden campaign is worried about losing votes of pro-Palestian enclaves in the state.

The Biden campaign is worried enough about Michigan’s pro-Palestinian voters that he sent a delegation of high-level officials to Dearborn on February 8th to meet with Arab American and Muslim leaders. The event included Mayor Hammoud, who obviously wasn’t impressed with what he heard.

Protesters gathered outside of the hotel during the visit and some Democratic politicians didn’t bother to show up at all including Wayne County Commissioner Sam Baydoun. He told the Detroit News, “Until there’s a cease-fire in place, and until the genocide has stopped, people didn’t want us to meet with anyone at this present time.”

What does the “uncommitted” campaign hope to accomplish?

According to Richard Czuba, a pollster associated with the Glengariff Group in Lansing, an uncommitted vote reaching 20% would indicate dissatisfied individuals actively expressing their discontent, essentially protesting against Biden. If the percentage goes beyond 30%, it would serve as a clear signal to the president that significant issues exist within his base.

Some Democrats could be voting in Republican presidential primary.

The other hijinks planned by the Democratic party will probably not have much affect on the state’s election at all and it’s due to their own making.

Because Democrats pushed up the presidential primary to February, this resulted in the Republican Party deciding to split up their delegate count into two parts: 16 of their presidential delegates will be decided in the presidential primary and the remaining 39 will be decided at a district convention on March 2nd by the precinct delegates in a caucus.

The Democrats are encouraging their voters to cross over and vote on the Republican ballot for Nikki Haley in the presidential election primary. However, Haley would need a combined 33.5% of the vote to even get 2 of the 16 delegates.

Nevertheless, groups like PrimaryPivot, a national super political action committee, are still targeting crossover voters in states with open primaries like in Michigan, to vote for Trump’s opponent. Robert Schwartz, a co-founder of PrimaryPivot told the Detroit News, “Our purpose is to get voters across the political spectrum to vote against Donald Trump in the Republican primary because we view him as a unique threat to our democracy.”
