CHEBOYGAN, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Anglers hoping to wrangle Black Lake sturgeon this weekend will have to hold off as the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced that the season is canceled.
“In addition to protecting the lake sturgeon population, the safety of anglers and staff is critically important,” said Randy Claramunt, DNR Fisheries chief. “We encourage all anglers across Michigan to use extreme caution while on the ice, as we have been experiencing above-average temperatures.”

The marginal ice conditions on Black Lake prompted the DNR to have concerns over harvesting the fish and the inability of department personnel to track the population.
This is the first time the Black Lake sturgeon season has been canceled, according to the DNR.
