MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan students are invited to enter the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office ‘Knocking Violence Out of My School’ video competition.

What is the assignment?

“The assignment is this: We don’t want any more threats. We don’t want anymore bullying. We don’t want any more violence in schools,” said Peter J. Lucido, Macomb County Prosecutor, on CBS News. “So let’s take a step back and say, ‘What message do you need to tell the entire student body [so that] this will not be allowed anymore?’”

Videos must be two minutes or less and engage with the prompt of “protecting our future by curbing school violence now.” Prizes of up to $1,000 are awarded to winners.

Who won last year?

Last year’s winner, Moriah White, created a video using photos of school shooting victims and fragments of old news headlines.

“I did the video because the day before we were told about the assignment, the school shooting at Michigan State took place, and it just felt right to do my video on something that is starting to become so common,” White said.

“This year alone my school has experienced threats,” said Cole Pannell, who won second place in last year’s competition. “One of my friends missed his senior night for soccer because of a ‘joke’ he made to his friends … I thought this video competition was an amazing idea to engage more students about the issue of threats, bullying and other issues that plague schools.”

How can a student find out more information?

Students can find more information about the competition here.

“All the students came with their own creativity and their own idea, and [their] own identity,” Lucido said. “If parents aren’t getting through to the students … then let the students make their own message so they get it clear, they get it concise, and they get it right, so we stop the nonsense.”
