KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – As Michigan prepares to enter the slick, snowy months of winter, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is hoping new digital signs along one pf the the state’s main freeways will help promote safe driving.

MDOT has installed 14 new digital signs along I-94. These signs, which are part of a $4.9 million project, stretch from western Kalamazoo County to eastern Berrien County. MDOT officials said the new signs offer significant improvements compared to existing boards.

This enhancement allows MDOT to convey messages such as “winter weather ahead,” “slick roads ahead,” and “heavy rain ahead” on the signs, along with advisory speeds.

Each of the 14 digital signs is equipped with sensors that detect air and ground temperature, wind speed, precipitation and visibility, providing real-time information to motorists.

A previous study conducted by MDOT also revealed a higher rate of crashes in this specific area.
