LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A new display adorns the Michigan Capitol lawn this holiday season called the “Yule Goat.” It bears a medallion from the Satanic Temple of West Michigan.

Who put up the display?

People erected a black goat-like statue in front of the Capitol wreathed in pine needles and two medallions. One had the words of the Satanic Temple; the other said the words “Axial Tilt is the Reason for the Season.”

The Satanic Temple of West Michigan’s X account indicates that as of 2021, it hosted its fourth annual “Yule Goat Erection Ceremony.”

“TST-WM would like to extend our invitation to join us, December 21 at 7pm at the Michigan State Capitol (Northeast lawn) for the fourth annual Yule Goat Erection Ceremony,” the group said on social media. “We look forward to having you. Ave Satanas!”

The Satanic Temple of West Michigan did not immediately respond for comment regarding the new display.

What about the Nativity?

Former State Senator Rick Jones (R-Grand Ledge) set up the Nativity scene up every morning and took it down every night per capitol grounds rules. Jones did this as a fulfillment of a promise to constituents.

He shared with the Lansing State Journal in the past that he felt the Satanic Temple display was a taunt.

“I do feel, however, this Satanic Temple group doesn’t really have a holiday they’re celebrating, they’re just doing it to taunt Christians,” he said. “My advice to everyone is to simply ignore them.”

Where is the display?

The new display is located proximate to the Nativity scene, bearing the likeness of baby Jesus, his earthly parents Mary and Joseph. Next to both of the two religious displays are signs exempting the capitol’s involvement.

“This exhibit is not owned, maintained, promoted, supported by or associated with the State of Michigan or the Michigan State Capitol,” the signs say.

Is this happening elsewhere?

A satanic display within the Iowa statehouse was recently destroyed but had gained the attention of many Iowans including Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds who shared her displeasure with the display.

“Like many Iowans, I find the Satanic Temple’s display in the Capitol absolutely objectionable,” Iowa Gov. Reynolds said in a statement. “In a free society, the best response to objectionable speech is more speech, and I encourage all those of faith to join me today in praying over the Capitol and recognizing the nativity scene that will be on display – the true reason for the season.”
