LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Crashes with deer hit an all-time high in Michigan in 2022, according to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

DNR statistics indicate nearly 59,000 such crashes and eleven people killed last year. DNR deer, elk, and moose specialist Chad Stewart says the deer population has grown and that’s among the reasons for the increase in crashes.

Stewart and others are telling people to never veer from a deer and it’s safer and better to hit it.

Deer-involved crashes were most common in October and November. Those two months accounted for 19,490 of the crashes. The most common times for deer crashes were between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m., and between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.
