LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan legislators are still fighting about the shifting of a House Resolution from a floor vote to a committee for consideration.
Soon after the attacks on Israel by Hamas, State Representative Bill Schuette (R-Midland) drafted House Resolution 146, which gained tremendous support from Republicans and some Democrats.

“Bring forward our resolution that 1) condemns the brutal acts of terror committed by Hamas, 2) Calls for the release of those in hostage, and 3) Reaffirms our state’s support for Israel,” Representative Bill Schuette said at the capitol, “Frankly, it’s awful we even have to make this request, it should not be controversial or complicated to condemn what we witnessed in Israel last week.”
One of the more than 30 house Republicans who gathered on the capitol steps on Wednesday, Representative Angela Rigas (R-Caledonia Township), spoke against the House who hasn’t passed its version.
The Michigan Senate passed its version of HR 146 on Wednesday, leaving the House to still decide whether to pass a similar resolution.
“Make no mistake, Michigan House members on both sides in the vast majority want this resolution and want to denounce these terrorists,” Rigas said. “But unfortunately, once again our Democratic colleagues are afraid. They’re afraid of a small faction amongst their leadership who are so caught up in pro-Palestinian social rhetoric that they’re begun actively lobbying members to block any official anti-Hamas messaging. It would be pathetic if it wasn’t so enraging. This majority party isn’t a majority at all. It’s a group of loosely connected bullies controlled by whoever bullies best.”
Rigas says she fully plans to support the resolution if and when it reaches the floor and urges Democrat Speaker Joe Tate to gain control of his party radicals.
“We can’t allow two or three people to decide what Michigan stands for or what its government can or cannot say,” Rigas said. “If they think they can ignore this and we’ll let it go they are sorely, sorely mistaken.”

Floor Leader Bryan Posthumus (R-Cannon Township) who sits on the House Government Operations Committee where HR 146 currently resides, moved to once again consider the resolution, but was blocked by House leadership.
“We are reaching a point of no return here,” Posthumus said. “If another week goes by without a vote on this then the people have every right to be confused about where we stand on what should be very simple. There is a very small contingent of powerful Democrats who are forcing their colleagues to block this resolution. A tiny minority is bending the majority party to its will. Which once again proves: there is no majority in the House. Only factions of Democrats who sometimes work together. There is really only one option for us: condemn terrorism. The Speaker needs to take bold action and show Michigan this is not where most of the House stands by pulling this forward and calling for a vote.
Alongside the more than 40 Republican co-sponsors, six House Democrats side with them condemning the terrorist attacks. The resolution remains in the House Committee on Government Operations.
