JACKSON, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The City of Jackson is launching a new program to build affordable, single-family housing on vacant lots.

The 100 Homes Program will develop city-owned residential lots and provide down payment assistance for qualified homebuyers earning up to 120% of the area median income. Home prices will be capped at $175,000.

“We’ve seen around 90 potential buyers apply through the soft opening of this program, so it’s encouraging to see people excited to take advantage of this groundbreaking housing effort,” City Grant Coordinator Cory Mays said.

Buyers can choose from three construction plans, including Colonial, Ranch, and Company House, which can include up to three bedrooms and 1.5 baths. A mix of one- and two-story homes will be available, and they will be constructed to match the style of the surrounding neighborhoods. Buyers can also choose several home features, including siding/shutter color, interior cabinet color, and other builder-approved design choices.

Each home comes with a detached shed, basement, porch, appliances, central heating, and air conditioning. Accessible homes for buyers with disabilities are also available.

The plan is funded by $2.5 million allocated from the American Rescue Plan, a federal program created to support families and repair the economy after the pandemic.

The first homebuilding projects are expected to kick off in 2023 and continue through 2026.
