Update September 7, 2023 at 4:30 p.m. – The suspect is a 39-year-old man from Florida. 

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (Michigan News Source)- Michigan State Police say they have taken the suspect into custody. The male suspect was eventually found in a wooden area behind homes on Riverside Drive outside Sault Ste. Marie city limits late Wednesday night. Around 2:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, he was taken into custody following an exchange of gunfire with police on the scene at Riverside Drive between 7 and 8 Mile Roads.

The crossroads where Michigan State Police took a suspect into custody on Thursday afternoon. They say the suspect allegedly torched several police cruisers at the Sault Ste. Marie post a day earlier.

From Sault Ste. Marie MSP Post Wednesday morning:

The events began when the Michigan State Police in Sault Ste. Marie reported that around 3:30 Wednesday morning multiple cruisers were set ablaze at the post, then hit multiple times with shots from a rifle. No officers were in the cruisers at the time.

The suspect is seen wearing full camouflage clothing and driving a sliver Honda CRV. He is still at large and considered armed and dangerous.

As of 9am this morning, all local schools were on lockdown, with classes continuing and police presence at all schools.

“We are asking anyone in the area between 3 Mile Rd and M-80 on M-129 who may have home surveillance cameras to check activity from 3:15am and into the morning for any suspicious activity or the suspect vehicle (Silver Honda CRV). The condition of the suspect is not known at this time.

The motive for the suspects actions have not been released.
